You should always thoroughly research the latest information on the fellowship. Getting the greatest odds of obtaining money will follow from initially researching the prerequisites and then determining if you qualify. Before you even begin, seek to understand the potential motivations of the Japan Foundation and their reason for offering the Research Fellowship. If you are qualified, verify that there is a reasonable chance to receive the fellowship. After figuring out that there is a good chance of going on to be a recipient of the Research Fellowship, then it is useful to use your time.
An important detail in the process of trying for the fellowship is filling out the application correctly. Occasionally the process can be drawn-out and laborious, but it is absolutely critical that the forms are filled out precisely and completely. Avoid mistakes that might make you get passed over because of some minor point.
After the required forms have been mailed, you should note when the Research Fellowship distributes the money so you'll be aware of whether or not you will be able to count on the fellowship to provide additional support for your financial needs and its personal usefulness, as there may be restrictions on how you can use the Research Fellowship. Increasingly, it is tough to cover the increasing costs of education, and having the additional resources of the Research Fellowship to defray some of the costs can be a huge help. If you don't end up getting the Research Fellowship, don't give up, you might find new fellowships and your persistence may be rewarded.
