Requirements: Applicant must be a racial/ethnic minority (Black/African-American, Latino/a, American Indian or Alaskan Native, Asian, or Pacific Islander) who is interested in mental health issues and is applying to or enrolled in a sociology department that has a strong mental health research program and/or faculty who are currently engaged in research focusing on mental health issues. Awarded primarily to minority students entering a doctoral program in sociology for the first time or students in the early stages of their graduate programs. Selection is based upon commitment to research in mental health and mental illness, academic achievement, scholarship, writing ability, research potential, financial need, and racial/ethnic minority background.

You should always carefully examine available information on the fellowship. Your best chance of obtaining money will follow from first understanding the qualifications and then determining if you qualify. At the outset seek to understand the driving force for the American Sociological Association and what they hope to achieve with the Minority Fellowship. After making sure you satisfy the prerequisites, you should determine if there is any likelihood to obtain the fellowship. If you think that you have the possibility that you can be a recipient of the Minority Fellowship, then you should put forth the effort to apply.

An important aspect of working toward obtaining the fellowship is paying close attention to the application. Applications can sometimes be lengthy and tedious, but it is absolutely critical that you fill out the application accurately and without omission. You don't want to miss out because of some minor point.
